Two ways to test

Popular lengths: 1-minute test · 3-minute test · 5-minute test. Want a challenge? Try an online typing race.

What your result means

WPM counts five typed characters as one word. Gross WPM is everything you typed; net WPM takes off one word per minute for every word left wrong. Accuracy is the share of keystrokes that were right, so a mistake you fix still counts. Read what a good typing speed is to see where you stand.

After the test

Instead of a bare number you get an analysis of your keystrokes: which keys and key pairs cost you time, which mistakes you repeat, your speed per finger, and a practice drill made from your weak keys. Then learn how to type faster or start the typing lessons.

Common questions

How long should a typing test be?

One minute is enough for a quick check. Three or five minutes gives a steadier result, because one lucky or unlucky sentence counts for less. Job tests are usually three to five minutes.

What is the difference between gross and net WPM?

Gross WPM counts everything you typed. Net WPM takes off one word per minute for every word left wrong, so it is the number employers and certificates use.

What is a good score on a typing test?

Around 40 WPM is average for adults, 60 WPM is fast and 80 WPM or more is very fast, all with at least 95% accuracy. See the full chart on the good typing speed page.

Can I take the typing test on a phone?

Yes, tap the text and type with your phone's keyboard. Phone speeds are not comparable with a real keyboard, so use a physical keyboard for a result you want to compare or share.

Do I need to sign up?

No. The speed test is free with no sign-up. Sign in only if you want your results saved across devices or a typing certificate.
